Getting Noticed as a Sales Candidate on LinkedIn: Specificity is Key
One of the fantastic traits of sales professionals is their openness to networking and connecting, even if they aren’t actively looking for new opportunities. This willingness to engage is a significant advantage, but many salespeople don’t get specific enough on their LinkedIn profiles. Providing detailed and targeted information is crucial if you want to be considered for the right opportunities and maximize your chances of a job offer.
Here are a few tips to enhance your LinkedIn profile as a sales candidate:
Be Specific About Your Clients and Industry:
Don’t just mention you’re in "sales" or "business development." Specify the clients you sell to and the industry you’re in. Use multiple keywords to describe the industry. For example, if you’re in AgTech and selling to food service providers, food processors, or CPGs (Consumer Packaged Goods) involved in food processing and packaging, spell that out. Detail whether you sell to small, independent businesses or large chains. If you can list specific customer names, do it. This makes it much easier for recruiters to target their search.
Elaborate on Your Role and Achievements:
Instead of just listing your title and what your company does, write a sentence or two about the company and then focus on your specific contributions and achievements. Also, use keywords either in your "About" section or when listing your experience to describe other titles that could be used for your role (e.g., National Account Manager, National Sales Executive, Key Account Executive). This way, you are more likely to pop up in a search, and the recruiter can dig into your experience from there.
Share information about your book of business. Mention the dollar amount you’re managing, whether you’re a hunter (finding new clients) or a farmer (growing existing accounts), and the scale of your sales efforts (e.g., "Currently managing a book of business worth $5M, focusing on expanding market share within the healthcare industry. Responsible for both acquiring new clients and nurturing existing accounts."). Share awards like President's Club and relevant metrics, such as performance against quota (e.g., achieved 167% of a $3.5M quota).
Example:
"At XYZ Corp, I increased annual recurring revenue by 30% by developing relationships with key stakeholders in the healthcare sector. Successfully closed deals with major clients like ABC Health and DEF Insurance."
Highlight Your Sales Skills Through Your Accomplishments:
While listing sales skills is helpful, sales leaders want to know the results you’ve achieved and the clients you’ve worked with. This provides context to your skills. Describe how you’ve accomplished your sales goals, the strategies you’ve used, and the outcomes you’ve delivered.
Example:
"Through consultative selling, contract negotiation, and account management, I’ve signed three significant enterprise software deals this quarter, increasing revenue by 30% in the first year and growing my book of business by X%."
By getting specific about your experience, clients, and achievements, you’ll make it much easier for recruiters to find a strong fit for you. Your detailed profile not only highlights your expertise but also demonstrates your understanding of the industry and your proactive approach to career development.
